When word spread that students at the Hansen Elementary School were raising money to purchase a Travellers magnifying unit for the Stoughton Public Library, the local chapter of the Lions Club stepped up to help.
With a long-standing tradition of funding eye research and supporting people with sighted disabilities, the Stoughton Lions Club purchased two of the magnifying units for the library last year. Loaned out on a monthly basis to visually impaired Stoughton residents, the Travellers units have been very popular. The units are portable and can magnify an item up to 16 times its normal size.
With one unit running approximately $2,000, Lions Club officials offered to supplement funds raised by Hansen School students in order to purchase the third unit.
Organized by the school's nurse, Sue Rock, students raised $589 through the sale of hand-made paper hearts within the school.
"I think it shows great community spirit for the kids to think of less needy people...especially at their age it is wonderful to help out within the community," said Lester Davis, president of the Stoughton Lions Club.
