| Students of the Hansen School in Stoughton check out a Habitat for Humanity poster in their classroom. This particular 5th grade class will be raising money for two homes that will be built in Stoughton by Habitat for Humanity. |
Every year, fifth graders at the Hansen Elementary School in Stoughton raise funds for a different cause. Efforts have not changed, as students at the school will raise money for Habitat for Humanity this year.
The funds raised each year are generated from the fifth grade annual heart project fundraiser, where students make and decorate paper hearts from construction paper. The finished products are then sold within the school prior to Valentineís Day. The funds raised are then donated to the particular cause.
'The students need to realize that the community is a big part of what makes everything come together,' said School Nurse Susan Rock, who organizes the heart project each year. 'I hope this expands their horizons and empowers them to want to do community service as a lifelong endeavor.'
The South Shore Habitat for Humanity is an independent, non-profit organization that works to provide families of low-income with homes, entirely through its own fundraising, volunteer recruitment and publicity.
The organization recently received the go-ahead to begin fundraising for two homes to be located in Stoughton, with the possibility of a third also in the works. One location would be across from the West Elementary School on Commercial Street and the second location would be on Eastwood Road by Cobb Corner, said Pat Galvin, chairperson for the local Habitat partnership committee.
