Dear Parents and Guardians of Stoughton High Students:
I am writing to request your assistance in a tremendously important initiative at Stoughton High School- the development of cultural competency. Given the diversity of the student body of Stoughton High School, developing cultural competency has been identified as a major priority by the School Council of the high school. Cultural competence ìrefers to an ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures. Developing cultural competence results in an ability to understand, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures.î
We are fiercely proud of the diversity at the high school and the ways in which all cultures and backgrounds are embraced in our community. We are also aware that to insure success for all students, we need to develop greater cultural competency among students, faculty and staff at the high school.
This spring, the high school appointed adjustment counselor Christine OíMalley as our cultural competency coordinator. She is teamed with Amy Stickles, Statewide Diversity Director for the Department of Social Services. The first step for us as a school is to conduct a needs assessment and determine where we are as a school community. We need to hear from all constituencies in this community- students, parents, faculty, staff and administration.
The purpose of this letter is to invite you to a parent forum on May 1st from 6:30-8:00pm at the high school. We will be offering onsite complimentary babysitting from our student council members. There will be an adult supervisor present as well.
Please make every effort to attend this very important meeting. Please RSVP by Monday, April 28th to c_omalley@stoughtonschools.org or call Christine at 781-344-7001 x334. This RSVP is necessary so that we can choose a room that will accommodate our size as well as have enough babysitter supports available.
During the school hours on May 1st, we will also be holding small student focus groups. We hope that with the dynamic voices of both students and parents, we will be able to sharpen our focus for the next year.
Thank you in advance for your support in this initiative! We will keep the community updated on our progress.
