On November 13, nineteen students from Mrs. Kelly's Advanced Placement Biology class (AP) and Mrs. Sasin's Science Seminar classes were able to go to Children's Hospital, courtesy of Project SCOOP, to experience what nurses do in various departments.
"The day began with a panel of nurses discussing their role in the hospital," Kelly said. "The students were able to hear about all the different nursing careers that are available."
Some of the nursing careers students were able to experience included neo natal (infant care unit), operating room, and recovery and charge nurse. They were also able to learn what type of educational background is required, and the different pathways people take to enter the field of nursing, Kelly explained.
"In the afternoon we were broken up into small groups," Kelly said, "Some students were able to visit the neo natal ICU, some students were able to experience the job of the transport team that are responsible for transporting very sick children to the hospital from all over the world."
Erica Lyons, a senior in Kelly's AP biology class, is aspiring to be an operating room nurse.
"I actually got to see first hand what I want to do for the rest of my life." Lyons said. "It was the most useful field trip I've been on."
According to Kelly and most of the other students on the trip, the most memorable moment was when "the students walked in and saw a premature born baby and she was as small as a hand."
"The trip was a huge success," Kelly said. "I would also like to make a special thank you to Mr. Terry Schneider and the Members of the Chamber of Commerce for allowing us to experience this incredible opportunity."
