Wilkins Elementary School

The Wilkins School Student Council, under the direction of advisor Mrs. Pearl, has organized a coat drive to help keep people in the local area warm this winter season. The Student Council members are pictured here in front of the donation bin at the Wilkins. Student Council members went to each class to announce the coat drive and encourage their fellow students (and school community) to donate. They have collected almost 100 new or gently worn coats. The coats will be given to Anton's Cleaners to be cleaned and distributed to those in need. Keep up the good work!

The Wilkins School had a great turnout for its Family STEM Night! Students and families were able to visit different classrooms to hear from guest presenters about their career in STEM, and then the students got to try a STEM activity related to that career field. Topics included geology, computers, construction, engineering, electrical work, police detective work, and firefighting. Mrs. Faria's Kindergarten class at the Wilkins School is pictured here during a recent reading workshop lesson. Students enjoyed some time outside while learning that they could use connecting words like and, after, then, and later to join the pages of their storybooks. After reading Jack and the Beanstalk as a class, students read their own storybooks under the beautiful fall trees behind the Wilkins School.

In conjunction with Veterans Day in November, the Wilkins School Student Council put together care packages to send to six Stoughton High graduates who are currently serving in the Armed Forces as their community service project this month. These SHS grads are stationed both stateside and overseas and will share the donations with their fellow servicemen and women. The Wilkins Student Council members are pictured here with the hundreds of items that were donated for the care packages. Keep up the great work, Wilkins Student Council!

Kindergarten students in Ms. Flewelling's class at the Wilkins School are seen here exploring pumpkins during their science time!

Third grade students at the Wilkins School participated in a rounding activity. They went “shopping” where they had $1 to spend and chose two items they wanted to buy. They rounded the prices of the items, added these together, and determined if they had enough money to buy both items.

As part of the units of study phonics program, kindergarten students at the Wilkins School made “name” necklaces.

Wilkins Wildcats are showing their school pride by wearing their favorite Wildcat gear or orange and black!

4th grade students at the Wilkins School were working on a project in art class featuring radial symmetry, where there is symmetry/balance in several directions arranged around a central point.

To celebrate Constitution Day, which commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787, the Wilkins School created its own Wilkins Constitution. The Wilkins Constitution had three categories - "Be Safe", "Be Respectful", and "Be Responsible". Wilkins classes discussed the rules and expectations they wanted to see included and wrote them out and placed the strips of paper under the appropriate category. Students then signed the Constitution, which will be on display in one of the hallways at the Wilkins during the month of September. National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed each year in the United States from September 15 to October 15, celebrating the culture, history, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic Americans. The Wilkins School is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by sharing these beautiful picture books (pictured here) with students. Teachers are reading these aloud to students during their interactive reading time.

Wilkins Kindergarten students had a great first day and are enjoying the start of the school year!

Our newest Wildcats were all smiles at the Wilkins School's Kindergarten Meet & Greet event!

Students at the Wilkins School loved greeting Detective Faria from the Stoughton Police Department on "High Five Friday"! High Five Friday was a special one day event sponsored by the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association where police officers visited schools across the state on April 29 to give high fives to students as they entered school. Amazing the things students can make when given basic items like paper towel/toilet paper rolls, cups, and pipe cleaners! Here are some examples of robots students recently designed and created in the makerspace in the learning commons at the Wilkins School!

Take a look at photos from the Community Math Day at the Wilkins School! Special guests visited classrooms at the Wilkins on April 6 to read a math-themed book to the students and then help the students with a math-based activity. Third grade students in Christine Bohn's class at the Wilkins School are seen here observing two tadpoles that are living in their classroom. Each third grade classroom at the Wilkins has tadpoles that students will be able to watch develop into leopard frogs! Students are even keeping frog journals to document their observations.

First graders in Mrs. Getchell’s class at the Wilkins School have been adding tools to their reading tool kits! Now they are able to read “hard” words! Way to go!

Here are some photos of Wilkins School third graders learning about frogs as part of a science enrichment program with Drs. Bless and Pearl of Science & Engineering Education Development (SEED). Third grade classes in each of our elementary schools will get the chance to participate in this program. The SEED program visited the Dawe in February, visited the Wilkins and Hansen March 21-25, and will be at the Gibbons and South March 28-April 1. Great opportunity for our students!
